OF THE GREATEST BIRTHDAY PARTIES ANYWHERE! Offer Good Marx* Thru Thursday • Minimum 10 Kds BLACK & WHITE AND COLOR PHOTO BOOTHS A Salty Dog The man who coulc sea into the future. Elizabeth Applebaum AppleTree Editor FYI: A Jewish inventor of the 18th century was the first to seek a patent on removing salt from sea water. In 1790, Jacob Isaacs secured a meeting with President George Washington to discuss a remarkable discovery: Jacobs had learned that salt could be extracted from sea water, leaving in its place a pure, fresh and quite drinkable-liquid. The next year, Isaacs appealed to the House of Representatives — again the subject was his wondrous inven- tion. Apparently Thomas Jefferson became involved in the case, and encouraged the House to financially support Isaacs. Yet for reasons we will never know, Congress dropped the matter and Isaacs drowned in obscurity. FYI: The son of a British duke was Jewish. Lord George Gordon (1751-1793) was the son of the third Duke of Gordon. Born in London, Lord George was a convert to Judaism. Some suggested the move was strictly a political one, done to gain Jewish financial support for causes he advo- cated. Yet Lord Gordon lived quietly and without taking advantage of his new situation, and was known to put on tefillin each morning and cloven, and to keep kosher. (You can read more about him in Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens.) FYI: If you keep kosher, you can't eat gecko. Gosh, darn, and those little critters look so tasty, don't they? A little toma- to sauce, maybe some sauteed onions... The gecko is a member of the lizard family. You can see them running throughout the Sinai Desert, especially at night when they're searching for tasty meals of spiders and insects. The Torah specifically mentions the gecko as treife. Leviticus 1 1 :30-31 reads, "The gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard and the chameleon — these are unclean." FYI: Despite those old movies that show ancient Israelites garbed in nothing but white, dyes were used in biblical times. In fact, workers knew how to make all kinds of colored cloths and threads, including a deep blue/pur- ple (as seen on tzitzit) from the rare murex snail; yellow from pomegran- ate rind; blue from the indigo plant; red from vegetables, certain minerals and bugs; and black out of myrtle berries. FYI: It was Art Garfunkel, not Paul Simon, who broke up the famous duo. Though it was Simon who wrote the songs, budding thespian Art (most recently seen in an Amy Grant Christmas special) decided to end the pair's longstanding musical endeavors because he want- ed to pursue act- ing. (And boy, hasn't his career just taken off!) Art Garfunkel: Move over, Laurence Olivier! 1 PARTY RENTALS AVAILABLE.
