I
t's winter and it's cold outside.
During these months, many peo-
ple spend time at the ice rink.
Some skate. Others play hockey.
"I've been playing for three
years at Farmington Ice Rink for
the Farmington Flames," said 14-
year-old high-schooler Michael
Feldman. Feldman is an avid
Wings fanatic who loves playing
hockey — on the ice and in the
street, on his in-line skates.
•
"I'm primarily a defensive player
(on the ice), but whenever my
coach needs me to be out on
offense I'm there," he said.
Feldman said he would do what-
ever his coach asks him to do out
on the ice. That philosophy has
landed Feldman and his team-
mates a great record and terrific
team. chemistry.
"We are first place in 'our hock-
ey division, and if we win our
next two games we will go to dis-
trict playoffs, which is really good
because Farmington is a newer
league and it's harder to get to
the districts," he said. With a 13-
6 record, the Flames don't seem
likely to burn out any time soon.
"I don't see the puck very much
on defense, and I make do with
what I get. But when you have
great teammates it's easy to look
good," Feldman said.
He has four goals to go along
with 11 assists so far on the sea-
son.
Scott Warheit, a sports fanatic
who also collects sports memorabil-
ia, attends North Farmington High
School.
"We start off with a half hour of
conditioning, which consists of
skating drills where we go from
blue line to blue line and we have
races, and then 10 minutes of
shooting drills before we scrim-
mage."
Hockey is not all Feldman plays.
In the non-winter months, he can
be found on the gridiron of the
football field.
"It yvas fun being on the football
team," he said of being on the
North Farmington freshmen and
then J.V. football teams. "Even
though we went 2-5 during our
. season, we played hard and we
always had a good time. We
also had great coaches who
never let us get down on our-
selves."
Feldman, who played defense
and offensive lineman during the
year says the practices were gru-
eling.
If you're noticing a pattern with
cold-weather sports, you're not
alone. Along with football and
hockey, Feldman loves to hit the
slopes by skiing and snowboard-
ing.
"I've been skiing for eight years,
and I just picked up snowboard-
ing. Snowboarding is a pretty
big challenge. I was good at
skiing and I wanted to try some-
thing new. Snowboarding is more
dangerous, because you always
have to be careful and don't go
over your head out on the slopes.
You can't make a mistake out
there."
Feldman has a lot on his plate.
His love of sports, along with a
great g.p.a., make for a good
combo.
