Tu B'Shevat
With Teva
Teva: The Jewish Environmental
Connection will host its first commu-
nity-wide TuB'Shevat Seder 1 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
Teva is a program of the Jewish
Federation's Community Outreach
and Education Department devoted to
promoting the connection between
Jewish life and the environment and
creating social action projects related
to the environment. The group also
holds outings with opportunities for
Jewish learning.
The interactive Tu B'Shevat seder,
held in celebration of the Jewish new
year of the trees, will feature tradition-
al foods: figs, oranges, nuts, carob and
wine.
A donation of $2 per person is
requested. Proceeds will go to environ-
mental programs in Israel.

JPM Plans
Events Calendar .
Rabbi Ernst Conrad, rabbi emeritus of
Temple Kol Ami, will present "The
Legacy of Martin Luther King: A
Jewish Perspective," 1 p.m. Monday,
Jan. 19, at the JPM. This program is
free of charge and open to all.
A concert, featuring Laura
Schwartz, will be presented 1 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 22, at the JPM.
_Schwartz, a native Detroiter, studied
piano and voice at Oakland University
in Rochester. She teaches music, voice
and acting in several suburban com-
munities. There is no charge.
Socials are held every Wednesday at
1 p.m. Music is provided by local
entertainers.
Woodcarving meets Mondays
through Fridays at 9 a.m. New mem-
bers are welcome. Supplies are includ-
ed in the beginning. There is no
charge.

New Americans
Meeting Place
Congregation Beth Shalom will dedi-
cate a room in its building for use by
the new American community 1 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 18. The room will be
named in memory of Bessie and
Morris Teitel and will be called the
Gathering Place. It will be used by
residents of the former Soviet Union
for discussions, lectures and other
activities. Cake and coffee will be
served.
A picture exhibit of St. Petersburg is
now hung on the walls of the Gathering
Place. In the future, other large cities
where new immigrants arrived from will
be highlighted with pictures. The com-
munity is invited to submit pictures
which show scenes or people from vari-
ous large cities in the former Soviet

Friends Day
At Library
The Friends of the Huntington
Woods Library will hold its "Friends
Day" 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the
library.
Reg Pettibone of the Ho-Chung
Nation will present a Native American
dance and cultural program, featuring
authentic Native American costumes
and dances; there also will be a discus-
sion of Native American artifacts. This
program is suggested for children ages
five and up, as well as adults.
At 3 p.m. join the library for a
reception and open house, featuring
artists from surrounding areas. This
multi-media exhibit will be featured
in the Woods Gallery through Feb.

Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit will host an open house 7
p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the day
school. Parents with children entering
kindergarten and/or first grade in the
fall of 1998 are encouraged to attend.
