Netanyahu's accomplishments far out- weighed his presumed inadequacies in administrative matters. He was stead- fast in reasserting Israel's right to build in its capital, Jerusalem, and in reaf- firming the rights of the settlements to expand their infrastructures to keep pace with "natural growth." The prime minister has demon- strated his adherence to the peace process but made further concessions to the Palestinians contingent on PLO's strict compliance with treaty obligations. Responding to the contentious issue of "religious pluralism," Netanyahu has appointed Finance Minister Ya'akov Ne'eman to head a commission charged with negotiating a compromise that may be acceptable to the contending parties. However, the push for religious pluralism will suffer a setback if it is perceived as a devious maneuver aimed at bringing down the Likud government. Netanyahu is faced with the deci- sion of turning over ancestral Jewish land to a hostile Palestinian Authority, a decision that is the most fateful and irrevocable that any prime minister of Israel can make. The Jewish Forward, in a timely and gutsy editorial, observed that "there is no reason whatsoever for Mr. Netanyahu to rush things just because a secretary of state with a strong case of moral equivalency comes down with ants in her pants. It is precisely at this stage when the community here needs a leadership that will address the administration in clear and forceful terms." If the chill engendered by the "polite" and well-rehearsed applause that greeted the Israeli prime minister when he addressed the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations is a reflection of the mind- set of the American_ ewish communi- ty, the American Jewish leadership is at fault. ❑ FEATURING • Wall Units • Bedrooms • Dining Rooms • Home Theatre • Tables • Offices LETTERS PEACE from page 32 SPECIALTIES • • • • • Formica Woods Stones Glass Lucite LOIS HARON - 851-6989 Allied Member ASID ATTITUDES • • • for the Mind Specializing in heart warming .9'4'4 relaxation and self-improvenzent aids. (248) 539-2200 • Attitudes @ Feelings.com says "Israel is Arab land illegally occupied by Jews." Their maps of "Palestine" show all of Israel, and Tel Aviv is called a "Jewish settlement." Arafat delivers fiery speeches to Arabs — urging them to wage "jihad ... via deaths" — Islamic holy war against Israel. He says he is "proud" of the "heroes" that murdered Jews. Besides their massacres in Lebanon, the PLO has blown up airplanes and synagogues, murdered 26 Christian pilgrims at Israel's international air- port, shot 13 mothers and their babies in Krya Shemona, cut the throats of 21 school children in Ma'alot, killed 17 Israeli Olympic athletes ... must we forget all this? The terrorist PLO must NOT be in a position to do to the Jewish people what they did to the Lebanese. They must NOT be in the hills overlooking Jewish communities, NOT be at the gates of Tel Aviv, NOT be inside Jerusalem. Jews must keep 40 miles from the river to the sea, the religious and historic homeland of the Jewish people. Hymie Cutler Director, Michigan Committee for a Safe Israel What Is In A Name? I wish to take a moment to thank you for the sensitivity and objective analy- sis that you have shown in having recently changed your paper's name from The Jewish News to simply JN. Having so rriany articles dealing with gays, lesbians, homosexuals, mixed marriages, Chanukah/Christmas, it has become embarrassing to have "Jewish" associ- ated with your publicaton. So, it was refreshing to see the change and I just wanted you to know that it has been noticed and appreciated.
