be able to start the fifth war against
Israel.
No country can turn over any part
of its land to the Arab enemy and not
expect war for the remainder.
God said that if the Arabs or any-
one else are on Jewish land, then the
Jews will be expelled. Thus, it is not
the image of the threatening Arab; it
is the fact of Jewish fear that the
Palestinian Authority and their
claims on eastern Jerusalem that
sound the alarm for the Israeli Jews.
They know that Jews will have to die
in Arafat's war-in-the-making, yet
Jews are held in check by
Netanyahu, Ben-Elissar, who is try-
ing to sell Israel for money, and the
police. All for "peace" in the peace
process.

I read the article "Hora Horror" (Dec.
12) and I am glad that you wrote
about this topic. I have heard of only
one injury, but I feel strongly about
abolishing this ritual.
I just attended two weddings and I
didn't participate. Some people
thought I was acting ridiculous.
I feel so strongly that I could actu-
ally lead a group against the hoisting
procedure.
Thanks again for writing about the
topic.

Membership
Accuracy

I would like to correct the statement
made in your article of Jan. 2
("Betrothal"), regarding the number of
members that belong to Congregation
Beth Achim.
Contrary to the reported number
of 250, we have a current membership
of 360 family units.

At What Price
Land For Peace?

Dr. Kenneth Stein is completely
wrong in charging that Jews took
Palestine from the local population

("Surprising Thoughts On Arab
Autonomy" Jan. 2).
In the mid-1800s, when Jewish
pioneers began making settlements in
Palestine, it was largely an uninhabited
wilderness of deadly malaria-infested
swamps and bone-dry deserts.
Jerusalem, then a community of hov-
els, was the largest town and, accord- .
ing to the Turkish census, had far
more Jews than Muslims and
Christians. With hard work and loving
care, they brought the land to life.
The Jewish development of Palestine
attracted Arabs from nearby commu-
nities.
In the '30s, Jews were being massa-
cred in Europe — trapped with no
escape. No country — not even our
America — offered them sanctuary.
The British ruled Palestine under a
League of Nations mandate requiring
them to "facilitate Jewish emigration
... and settlement." England gave in to
Arab violence and betrayed their trust.
The desperate Jews were blocked from
entering Palestine. While Jews were
left to die, the British flooded
Palestine with Arabs from foreign
lands.
Since the destruction of Jerusalem's
first Temple in 586 BC, largelewish
communities flourished throughout
the Middle East and North Africa.
Enraged over their failure to destroy
Israel in 1948, the Arab states subject-
ed their Jewish communities to intim-
idation, persecution and massacres.
Finally, they kicked out their Jewish
citizens after taking from them all they
had. Those Jews from Arab lands dou-
bled Israel's population.
Doesn't. Dr. Stein know there
already has been a two-state solution
between Arabs and Jews? An inde-
pendent Arab Palestine state already
exists. A land-for-peace has already
taken place. But, unfortunately, it
has not brought peace. When the
British ruled Palestine, they ousted
all Jews living east of the Jordan
River and gave that 78 percent of the
Jewish homeland as a gift to the
Arabs. In 1946, the British created
there the Arab Palestine country of
Jordan. Today, that Arab Palestine
has fewer people than are living west
of the river, the area left for the
Jewish people.
The Palestine Liberation
Organization was created in 1964 for
destroying the Jewish state. Yassir
Arafat, leader of the PLO, calls him-
self the "President of Palestine" and
