became that much more critical to
perpetuate during the year, and thus
weekend retreats were held for both
children and adults. Through the
vision of its director, Macy B. Hart,
who knew the soul of this Southern
region from his own experience
growing up in the onlyiewish family
in Winona, Miss., the camp was on
its way to becoming the Jewish cultur-
al center of the deep South.
Now, almost in its 30th summer
season, Jacobs Camp is a celebra-
tion of being Jewish for thousands of
southern Jews who, like myself, have
been touched by its experience: One
need only step foot in the Museum or
the Southern Jewish Experience on the
camp grounds, where the history of
Southern Jewry is being preserved
and taught in photographic exhibits
and oral histories, to understand.
Ritual objects, sometimes all that
remains of once-vibrant and now
extinct Southern communities, adorn
its sanctuary and live among the wor-
ship of campers, adults and visitors.
You have to work hard at being
Jewish when you are one of few
Jews. You have to have some Jewish
experience strong enough to help you
feel confident about your identity,
strong enough to say it's OK to be dif-
ferent. That's what going to this Jewish
camp did for me.
Granted, not everyJewish camper
will have the same summer experi-
ence, or work full time at a Jewish
camp after college, or pursue a
career in Jewish communal service, or
get married at a Jewish camp like I
did. But in my mind, it would be a
missed opportunity for my children not
to attend a Jewish camp. The funny
thing is that my children, who had,
and loved, their first residential camp
experience last summer (at a Jewish
camp), don't think they "need" it.
I think they're wrong. I've seen what
it can do for them. I think they need it
even more — lest they take being
Jewish for granted — because grow-
ing up Jewish here, they have it so
easy.
