The Right Stuff

Some 52 million Americans have a
high blood cholesterol level — high
enough to need medical advice to
lower it, according to the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Here are some tips for lowering
your cholesterol levels, from
Prudential HealthCare: Know the
sources of cholesterol. A soft, fat-like
substance, cholesterol is produced by
the liver from foods such as egg yolks,
organ meats, fatty meats and whole-
milk dairy products. Vegetables don't
contain cholesterol.
Know the difference between good
and bad cholesterol. Cholesterol trav-
els to the cells through the blood-
stream by carriers called lipoproteins.
Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) con-
stitute "bad" cholesterol. High-density
lipoproteins (HDLs) are "good"
because studies show they may help
remove cholesterol from body tissues.
Have your cholesterol levels checked
regularly.
Lose weight if you are overweight.
Make regular physical activity a priori-
ty. Reduce the cholesterol in your diet.
Eat more fruits and vegetables and
whole grains instead of fatty meats
and baked goods; eat poultry without
the skin and lean meats, and consume
low-fat milk dairy products instead of
whole-milk products.
