Lady. Her boundless energy
showed us dances a little more
thrilling than "Hiney Ma Tov."
Before lunch, she wheeled out the
speaker to our kikar (our grassy
knoll — with a different signifi-
cance), and everyone who was
anyone would dance, with his best
"mayim" step, to the latest Israel
rock. It wasn't a good day for the
Dance Lady if the camp didn't get
four complaint calls from those fortu-
nate enough to live across the lake.
Another neighbor-pleasing idea
was used to teach us about
tzedakah. The annual "Im Tirzu-a-
thon" is about as good as it gets in
Jewish fund-raising. Usually, a
younger division collects pledges for
as many choruses of "Im Tirzu" ("If
you will it...it is no dream") as a
group of 1 2-year-olds can sing —
which is a lot. The continuous sounds
of one song drove everyone to offer
more money to shut them up — in
the name of tzedakah, of course.
We also learned to celebrate
Shabbat with music. The camp
would gather by the lake for
Kabbalat Shabbat. Before lighting
the candles, groups who had
rehearsed all week would use
dance, song and instrumental music
to bring in a spirit of Shabbat.
Built into our week day were
rehearsals for our musicals. Every
division performed a condensed
version of a Broadway show — in
Hebrew. We did Shalom, Dolly,
Rechov Sesame and HaMermaid
HaKatan, just to name a few. My
brother's claims to fame in life are
that he has a wonderful wife, and
that he played Joseph in a version
of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat when he
was 14. He still remembers some
of the words; the music helps bring
back the memories.
Every camp memory for me con-
tains some measure of music. Camp
is where my love and exploration of
Jevvish music began. I am also a lot
of fun to have on long car rides.
