SHIR TIKVAH

On Friday evening, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m.,
the Temple Beth El Sisterhood will cele-
brate Sisterhood Shabbat with the pre-
sentation of an original work, Echadi
The work, composed by guest artist,
Cantor Stephen Richards, is a service in
music for cantor, choir and congrega-
tion which joins all of its elements into
a single unit.
Debuting that evening will be a spe-
cially commissioned composition, sung
by Cantor Dubov, with words by Rabbi
Syme and music by Cantor Richards.
The work honors Mamie Tickton, who,
together with her late husband, Jason,
served the Temple for a combined 100
years as music and choral directors.
Cantor Richards is a graduate of
New York University, where he received
a bachelor's degree in music; he holds a
master's degree in music composition
from Columbia University and was
invested cantor at the School of Sacred
Music, Hebrew Union College. He is
cantor/educator at Congregation B'nai
Tikvah in Walnut Creek, Calif., and
conductor of the Bay Area Jewish
Chorus in San Francisco.
The community is welcome to
attend and participate in the service.

Weine Institute
Courses Start

The Rabbi Max Weine Institute for
Judaism will meet 7:30-9:30-p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Congregation
Beth Shalom.
The curriculum includes study of
Jewish history, holidays, the philoso-
phy of Conservative Judaism, as well
as prayers, and provides opportuni-
ties to experience and understand
sacred moments in the calendar.
Basic Hebrew is included along with
a Shabbat dinner at which partici-
pants can use the skills the course
provided.
Rabbi David A. Nelson teaches
the course assisted by Alicia Nelson.
Registration is required and can be
arranged by speaking with any of the
Conservative rabbis in the communi-

Rekindling

Congregation Beth Achim will partici-
pate with the community-wide
Rekindling Shabbat program on Friday,
Jan. 30. Families that regularly celebrate
