the former Soviet Union, is
now as normal, safe and
rewarding as to any other country in
Europe.
American Jews are going there in
greater numbers than ever reports
travel writer Ben. G. Frank, who has
just returned from a two-week trip to
Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev, the
three cities of greatest Jewish popula-
tion in the region.
The key to the increase is accessibil-
ity, both to sites of general tourist
interest and to places of Jewish interest
-- particularly for those travelers seek-
ing to find their roots, even in the
most remote shtetls, Frank says.
It has been his recent experience

merly plagued and entangled visitors

day's tour of St. Petersburg inevitably
head for the Hermitage Museum.
Another must-see for Jewish travelers is
an Oneg Shabbat at Hesed Avraham,
the Jewish Welfare Center for the elder-
ly and physically challenged.
Seventy years of communism has
denied most of St. Petersburg's
100,000 Jews knowledge of traditions
and history. The Lubavitch movement
is working to improve this situation
