hen Sam Seltzer was 14,
his nightmare began. The
German army marched
into Modrzejow, Poland,
and life was never the same. Like many
Holocaust survivors, Seltzer, of Oak
Park, repressed his experiences for
many years.
He eventually revealed his memories
in 1986 during the course of family
psychotherapy under the guidance of
Dr. Richard B. Traitel, of Bloomfield
Hills. The product of these dialogues is
the book Fences That Kill by Richard
Traitel and Martha Seltzer, Sam's wife.
"Perhaps it was the
safety derived from the
passage of time that
enabled him [Sam
Seltzer] to do so, or
simply that he was now
psychologically ready to
confront his past," wrote
Traitel in the preface.
The book is in narra-
tive and dialogue form.
The narrative describes
the life in pre-war Poland,
the Nazi labor and death
camps and liberation as a
"displaced person." The
dialogue is a question and
answer format between
Seltzer and Traitel which includes
insights about human nature and the
evils of prejudice. "We have a dialogue
to help young people understand
hatred, what it takes to survive and
how to face challenges. He talks direct-
ly to young people," said Traitel.

INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
The 1998 North American Interna-
tional Auto Show (NAIAS) begins Sat-
urday, Jan. 10, at Cobo Center. More
than 30 concept cars will make their
worldwide debut, including Acura TL-
X, Honda Minivan and BMW 707.
The Mazda Mx-5 Miata, Oldsmobile
Alero, Porsche 911, Mercury Cougar,

Subaru Hybrid and Toyota Solara
Coupe are just some of the 1999 mod-
els that will be showcased.
The NAIAS also will include inter-
active virtual reality exhibits by Sony
and Microsoft in the Cobo Arena area.
An Iwerks theater features a driving
simulator for 18 people with simulated
race car driving.
The NAIAS is open to the public
from Saturday, Jan. 10, through Sun-
day, Jan. 18, 10 a.m. -10 p.m. Adult
tickets are $8 each. Seniors are $4, and
children under 12 are free. Tickets are
available at the door.

PANIM EL PANIM
Last month several stu-
dents from Akiva Hebrew
Day School participated in
Panim el Panim, a four-day
learning program for teens.
Students toured the Capi-
tol, the United States
Holocaust Museum and
studied Jewish texts on
immigration as well as
social justice and equal
opportunity. They had
the honor of meeting
with Israel's Ambassador
to the United States,
Eliahu Ben-Elissar, U.S.
Rep. Carl Levin and
U.S. Rep. Joseph Knol-
lenberg.
"During Panim el Panim, I learned
about vast ways to help out the Jewish
community through politics and how
to get involved in issues that matter to
me," said Shira Teger of Southfield.
Other Akiva participants included
Chaim Flores, Nathan Gonik, Adam
Gardin, Shimon Pichette, Rivka Rabi-
nowitz, Mindy Rothstein and Elana
Rybak.
