explained. "Secondly, they did not
have a global, title sponsor like we
have with Ford Division. Finally,
they didn't have the regional, local
interest by virtue of a contract with a
regional/local conference such as the
Mid-American Conference."
Hoffman pointed out that the
first Cherry Bowl, which included
MSU, drew 70,000 fans. But the
second, featuring Maryland and
Syracuse, had no local interest and
drew only about 20,000 spectators.
And that was the end of the bowl.
"We have the support of 12
(MAC) institutions all within an
average drive of three hours of the
Pontiac Silverdome," Hoffman said.
Now that the first game is over,
Hoffman will head to Hawaii to
serve as director of operations for the
Hula Bowl, the top college all-star
game.
After working solidly for 18
months to get the game off the
ground, "It was nice to see it finally
come to fruition, and even better to
have such a great game on the field,"
Hoffman said. "We'll take the next
couple of weeks to wrap everything
up on this year's game, take a little
bit of a vacation and come back to
get organized for next year." ❑

Big Win
Akiva basketball defeated Wyandotte
Mount Carmel High School, a Class
D school, 51-48 in an overtime
game on Dec. 23.
Akiva (4-2), trailing by two points
with 10 seconds left in the fourth
quarter, forced the extra session on
an 8-foot jumper from Zevi Reinitz,
who had a game high 17 points.
In overtime, Luli Gotfried, who
scored 15, and Eli Goldenberg hit
free throws to ice the victory. Ariel
Reinitz and Erie Skoczylas had 16
rebounds each.
Akiva has earned a return invita-
tion to the Yeshiva University
Tournament in New York in March,
where last year they defeated eighth
ranked Cleveland and 10th ranked
Hamilton (Ontario) en route to win-
ning the Class C title.
