path, fighting for the same
cause. It was Selma, Ala.,

and a Christian, Rabbi
1963.
Abraham Joshua Heschel and Rev.
Martin Luther King, Jr., arm in arm.
Together.
Twenty-five years later,
Congregation B'nai Moshe will link
the two men once again through study
sessions honoring their memories.
Rabbi Heschel, whose 25th
yahrtzeit falls on Martin Luther. King
Jr.'s birthday Jan. 15, was a leading
peace activist during the civil rights
struggles and the Vietnam War. Raised
in a Chasidic community, he taught at
the Conservative movement's Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York
and wrote books on spiritual subjects.
When Heschel introduced King for
his speech to the Rabbinical Assembly
on March 25, 1968, 10 days before
King was assassinated, he said the fol-
lowing: "Where in America do we hear
a voice like the voice of the prophets of
Israel? Martin Luther King is a sign

that God has not forsaken the United
States of America ... Martin Luther
King is a voice, a vision and a way. I
call upon every Jew to hearken to his
voice, to share his vision, to follow his
way. The whole future of America will
depend upon the impact and influence
of Dr. King."
B'nai Moshe will host three study
sessions focused on Heschel's legacy.
Rabbi Elliot Pachter will lead the first,
at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15. At 8
p.m. the same day, the second session
will be led by Rabbi Aaron Bergman
of Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. The
third will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday,
Jan. 18, with Pachter. Each session
will include excerpts from an NBC
videotaped interview with Heschel,
plus a discussion of his writing and his
impact on modern Judaism. All ses-
sions are free, and will take place at
B'nai Moshe, 6800 Drake Road in
