There also are activities to enjoy
on land, including two man-made
beaches plus nature trails at the Coral
Reef State Park. Walking along one
trail, we admired mangroves and
pines and watched white herons, peli-
cans and seagulls flying overhead.
Besides its impressive natural
attractions, Key Largo has another
noteworthy feature — its Jewish
community. Located just off the
Overseas Highway in the town of
Tavernier, the Keys Jewish Commu-
nity Center is one of only two syna-
gogues in the Keys. (The other is in
Key West, 93 miles to the south.)
And because it's in a prime tourist
area, it draws Jewish tourists from
far-flung places.
These visitors find a modern syna-
gogue that evokes the mood of the
tropics: a one-story building of sim-
ple design, surrounded by native
trees and native foliage: palms, but-
tonwoods, frangipanas, royal poin-
cianas.

Inside, the sanctuary has seats for
150 worshippers. Six distinctive
stained glass windows depicting six of
the tribes of Israel were done by local
artist Lisa Ruggles. Here members
hold Shabbat services, with members
of the religious committee officiating.
The small congregation has never had
a rabbi in its nearly 18 years of exis-
tence.
The congregation is the Holocaust
education center for the Keys, arrang-
ing to have survivors speak at local
schools. The community seder was
held for the first time last year. Mem-
bers also work on various social
action projects for the larger commu-
nity — helping with food and cloth-
ing drives and with the children's
shelter.
And, of course, there are Shabbat
services every Friday evening, with an
Oneg Shabbat afterwards. Members
are always eager to extend a warm wel-
come to tourists and vacationers. II
