In "Stalking Elijah,"
author Rodger Kamenetz explores
loss, the exchange of religious
thought, and Jewish rebirth.

In his new book, Stalking Elijah (HarperSanFrancisco,

370 pgs., $22), Baltimore native Rodger Kamenetz, who is a

professor of English and director of Jewish Studies at

Louisiana State University, chronicles his spiritual journey by

delving into his encounters with the 14th Dalai Lama, the

leader of the Tibetan Buddhist movement. Mr. Kamenetz,

whose 1994 book The Jew in the Lotus is being turned into a

film, also explores his discussions and conversations with

other religious figures, as well as documenting his own

odyssey in placing Judaism in a personal and contemporary
