nation as a whole, the future of his chil-\
dren in the Egyptian exile and the
bondage to come. Though he knew full
well he was going to a land of plenty
and to live in comfort, who would
guarantee that his descendants would
want to leave Egypt and return to the
land of Canaan? Perhaps his children
would forget their destiny as they wal-
lowed in the plenty of Egypt and would—/
not want to leave."
God's promise to Jacob has three ele-
ments: (1) "I will go down with you
into Egypt; (2) I will bring you up
again; and (3) Joseph will lay his hand
on your eyes." Each segment has both a
personal and a national dimension.
On the personal level, God will
always be with Jacob, even in Egypt.
God will see to it that Jacob's body will (---/
be brought back to the land for burial
after his death. Joseph, the most
beloved child, will be at Jacob's side
when he dies to perform the ritual of
closing his eyes. All three parts of this
promise are fulfilled. On the archetypal
level, God's promise is one of a national
redemption and comfort. (1) God will
go down to Egypt with the children of
Israel and, by implication, will accom-
pany them in all their subsequent wan-
derings throughout history; (2) God
will bring the people up out of Egypt
and will redeem them from subsequent
exile as well; and (3) in the short run,
God will ensure that Joseph's power in
Egypt is used to further Jacob's goals for
the Jewish people.
The Netziv (Rabbi Naphtali Zvi
Yehuda Berlin, head of the Volozhin
Yeshivah from 1852-1892) made a tex-
tual argument in support of the arche-
typal interpretation, saying that when
Genesis 46:2 describes God as appearing
to Jacob "in visions of night" it does
not mean that the encounter took place
at night, but rather that it occurred in
the daytime but envisioned night, that
is, the darkness of exile.
As for God's promise that Joseph
will put his hand on Jacob's eyes, the
Netziv sees this, too, as a reference to
the national future: "(Jacob's) desire and
outlook was that his children should
dwell separately among the nations.
Thus it is written, 'Israel dwelled sepa-
rate and secure, the eye of Jacob.' "
(Deuteronomy 33:28)
Leibowitz sums it up: "The final rev- _/
elation to Jacob is shrouded in the
darkness of impending exile, weighed
down by the fears of physical and spiri-
tual bondage, 'in visions of the night.'
The sole ray of light is the Divine
promise: 'I will surely bring you up
again.'
