residents at the Teitel Federation
Apartments.
"They remember what it was like in
Russia, when their grandparents used
to pray," says Ida Kogan, Teitel's pro-
gram services director. "They didn't
have anything like this."
When Kogan got into social work,

she knew she wanted to help Russian
immigrants. After all, 24 years ago she
was in the same boat.
Kogan, her husband, and their two
daughters left the Russian Republic of
Moldova for Detroit in 1973.
• She doesn't remember why then-
Premier Leonid Brezhnev opened the
doors, but they took the opportunity
to leave.
"Because of the communist govern-
ment, the anti-Semitism wasn't as
open as now. People weren't allowed to
be," she says. "But it was there. People
on the streets would say things. My
