Detroit.
"He gave me a chance to run the
tapes," Rosenberg said. "It gave me
the chance to learn all I could about
the business."
After spending three years there, he
moved to WCAR-AM 1130 (later
WCXI) in Detroit. He started produc-
ing the morning radio show, and later
MSU football. After one year at WJR
in 1986, Rosenberg set off on his
own.
"Freelance is the best way to go,"
he said. "You answer to nobody, and
set the times you want to work."
Rosenberg, in the last 11 years, has
earned a reputation as the city's best
engineer.
"He's the greatest I've worked
with," said Mark Champion, the
sports director at WXYT-AM 1270, as
well as the play-by-play announcer for
the Lions and MSU basketball. "I'm
not sure how he does it all, but he
manages to.
"He never gets rattled. If something
goes wrong, he knows the equipment.
He's truly a pro that knows the busi-
ness."
During the off-season from his two
football gigs, Rosenberg is also called
on to engineer the National Basketball
Association game of the week for
ESPN Radio, from the end of
December through the end of the
NBA Finals. For that job, he looks to
places with good weather.
"When I see the schedule, I'm hop-
ing for a lot of Phoenix or Miami or
Orlando," he said. "I don't want to see
Cleveland in February."
His estimates for set-up time
assumes that all goes well. "I was
going to Knoxville to do a University
of Tennessee football game at noon on
a Saturday," he recalls. "My wife Evon
came with me, and we had to fly
through Nashville. The equipment
stayed there.
"I had to get to the stadium at 9
a.m., and the first flight left Nashville
at 10 a.m. We had a cab drive it in,
and he got there at 11. That was the
closest I ever cut it."
In the little spare time Rosenberg
gets, he plays hockey three to four
times per week, and golfs if he's at a
warm-weather site.
"I've been lucky enough to play
with (ABC broadcaster) Brent
Musberger at his club in Florida," he
said. "I'd really love to end up some-
place where I could golf all the time,
but I don't want to have to start
over. I've got the market cornered
here." ❑
