FYI: More than 200 years
ago a Jew opened a boxing
school.
Daniel Mendoza was living in
London during the 1 700s when
anti-Semitism was rampant through-
out Europe. "Dogs were not treated
so shabbily as some Jews were,"
was how one gentile, Francis
Place, described it. Then in 1787
Daniel Mendoza became England's
heavyweight boxing champion, and
opened his own school where he
taught the sport. Place says
Mendoza's influence was profound:
"This sport spread rapidly among
young Jews," he wrote. "[And] it
was no longer wholesome to molest
a Jew if he did not happen to be
an old man."

FYI: Jews from Turkey advo-
cate drinking eggplant juice
to cure a cough.
If your ancestors
are from Russia
or Poland,
chances are
you'll be
handed a
nice helping
of hot chicken
soup once you
feel the sniffles
coming on. But if
your forefathers
hail from Turkey, it's
more than likely eggplant will be
touted as the remedy for what ails
you. Yes, Turkish Jews are con-
vinced the much-maligned eggplant
works wonders: and all you have to
do is squeeze out the juice and
drink up. L'chaim!

FYI: The Rothschilds often
wrote messages in Hebrew

and Yiddish to keep them
private.
No doubt you have heard of this
famous banking family, but did you
know that in the 1 800s the
Rothschilds regularly traveled in a
carriage which had a secret floor?
They would leave messages for one
another underneath this hiding
place — messages that were
penned in Hebrew or Yiddish, just
in case they happened to fall into
unwelcome hands.

FYI: According to tradition,
King David's life was saved
by a spider.
The story goes like this: An envi-
ous King Saul was chasing David
through the mountains. When David
grew too tired to go any further, he
ran into a cave to hide. Inside was
a small spider who felt sorry for
poor David. As the spider heard
Saul coming near, it began to spin
a web that covered the entrance to
the cave. When King Saul
approached, naturally he was
certain David wasn't with-
in because the web was-
n't broken. And so he and
his men went away.

FYI: You don't have to
have a bar-mitzvah cer-
emony to be a bar mitz-
vah.
The words "bat mitzvah" literally
translate to "daughter of the
commandment," and "bar mitzvah"
is "son of the commandment."
What this means is that when a girl
is 12, and a boy is 13, they are
obligated to the Torah's command-
ments. Once you turn that age, you
are automatically bar or bat mitz-
vah — even if you never step up to
your congregation's bimah and
even if you don't receive a single
fountain pen. ❑
