through a New York City filter, circa
1959. It's a little bit Caribbean, a lit-
tle bit doo-wop, a little bit Gershwin
and, yes, a smidgen of Simon's world-
weary wisdom sneaks into the work,
too.
Occasional sparks of brilliance illu-
minate this album. The haunting,
evocative ballad "Adios Hermanos"
makes you want to rush out to buy
theater tickets immediately. And the
brassy bursts of "Born in Puerto
Rico" create a festive mood that begs
for stage interpretation. Even the
minor songs — the joyous love ditty
"Bernadette," the taunting, pre-brawl
ballad "The Vampires" and the teen-
idol silliness of "Quality" — reveal
Simon's melodic savvy.
Although this album is positioned
as "the new Paul Simon album," the
music is defined — and perhaps
hamstrung — by the musical theater
genre it was written for. Simon does-
n't share his personal thoughts with
us; he and co-lyricist Derek Walcott
instead try to get inside the heads of
the characters in the play. And the
narrative demands of musical theater
place an undue emphasis on lyrical
clarity at the expense of musical
spontaneity:
Because musical theater is a col-
laborative art form, Simon gives the
stars of his musical — Marc
Anthony, Ruben Blades and Ednita
Nazario — an opportunity to per-
form on this album. Simon junkits
are likely to fast-forward past these
tracks, but they would be wise to
give a listen to Nazario's stunning .
performance of "Sunday Afternoon."
It sounds- as if it could be a star-mak-
ng number.

Peter Carl Faberge. With The Egg of
the Covenant, Theo Faberge continues
the legacy of the fabled Faberge Eggs,
but with a contemporary interpreta-
tion.
The Egg of the Covenant echoes the
opulent style that became the favorite
of royalty the world over. Executed in
cobalt-blue crystal, the egg is
enhanced with sterling silver and 24-
karat gold and surmounted on four
white obelisks which symbolize the
captivity in Egypt. A ruby encrusted,
vermeil "burning bush" sits atop the
egg.
As with many of his grandfather's
'works, Theo Faberge's eggs also open
to reveal a "surprise." In this case, it
is a set of crystal and vermeil tablets
inscribed with the Ten
Commandments in Hebrew.
The Egg of the Covenant is a limit-
ed edition series of 750 pieces,
hand-made in England and signed
by Theo Faberge. For more informa-
tion about the St. Petersburg
Collection and other Faberge Eggs,
