Still, it seems unlikely that a firm agreement will be made before the summer, Keller says. Any agreement must be approved by Beth Achim's board and congrega-_( tion, he says. The next scheduled annual meeting is in the summer, hey're just talking, they insist. But while no agreement has been reached, the board of trustees at Congregation Beth Achim in Southfield has given the go- ahead to negotiate a merger with Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills. "We're only talking," says Gerald Keller, president of Beth Achim's board. "We have been approached by a number of different congregations in the city, and we're talking to everybody." Beth Achim, the Conservative congregation on 12 Mile Road, east of Lahser, is looking to merge because it can no longer sustain itself alone. Keller says many of the congregation's current mem- bers have moved to northwest suburbs such as Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield, while others live in Huntington Woods. "A lot of our members have moved away, and we have to be where our members are going," Keller says. "One of the reasons that [we're] talking with Adat Shalom is because it's not so dreadfully far as, let's say, B'nai Moshe or some of the other congregations that we've Adat Shalom Synagogue talked to.
