dinner brandy or flaming desserts ...
And for folks who loved backgam-
mon, a very much added plus was that
most of the tables were backgammon
boards.
Push Cart Cafe on Winder Street
was right smack in the middle of the
Eastern Market ... A visit to the boun-
tiful salad bar was proof that all fruits
and vegetables were fresh ... In fact,
the restaurant didn't even have a freez-
er All cheeses and crackers came
from nearby Hirt's ... The 1930s decor
was casual, with service by helpful
young waitresses in overalls and check-
ered shirts ... You didn't find any junk
food here ... It was healthful eating at
its most delicious ... A real garden of
Eden.
Piper's Alley, West Big Beaver, Troy, =/\I
was stunning ... Hanging baskets,
beveled and stained glass, decor, were
a modern, clean, uncliched departure
from the usual and served as an ele-
gant backdrop for the nattily attired
businessmen and women who gath-
ered there.
Pinkey's Boulevard Club, East
Grand Boulevard, had steady, faithful
customers who flocked there for years,
attracted by the reasonable prices and `—)
the very outgoing customers ... The
atmosphere was decidedly intimate in
the tiny bar room and dining room
downstairs.
Aliette's Bakery on Porter was the
sort of place for which that overworked
adjective, "intimate," must have been
coined ... Seating was only for 36 peo-
ple, which resulted in a race for reserva---/
tions, but those who succeeded in get-
ting them found the prize worth the
pursuit ... The mostly-French menu
varied daily, and was written up on a
chalkboard ... Aliette's didn't have a
liquor license, so patrons found their
bill somewhat lower than at other
French restaurants they had visited.
Original Irving's Deli on
Greenfield, before moving to La
Mirage, was where laughter, gossip
and lots of just plain talk were the rule
(and all were contagious) at Rose and
Irving Guttman's top-notch deli ...
Rows of dark wood and orange booths
flanked the open kitchen and display
of delicatessen ... Plenty of privacy ...
Plenty of light ... Some of the pleas-
ant, competent waitresses were long-
time friends of the owners and patrons\
alike ... and knew the daily specials
inside-out ... Waiting lines on
Saturday and Sunday were served free
hors d'oeuvres while catching up on
what's new and waiting for a warm
hug from Rose. ❑
