Elliot Lewkow, a.k.a. The Cappuccino Man: satisfying coffee drinkers across
Michigan.

When Lewkow moved to Michigan,
the coffee shop scene was barely alive,
although it was hopping in L.A. "There
was one coffeehouse in all of Detroit,
Java, [which was] really sleepy, nobody
there."
He estimates that the Detroit area
probably is only 50 percent penetrated
by the coffee industry.
Within two years, Lewkow believes
he number of coffeehouses in
Detroit will double. "It's not a trend
that will come and go like the hula
hoop," he says. Coffeehouses replaced
the bars of the '70s and '80s as meet-
ing spots, places to hear folk singers,
and now, a social option where stu-
dents can study. "They're here to
stay," Lewkow says.

r

He tries to "make every party like
the first party. This is the only bar
mitzvah Josh is ever going to have. I
don't stand there like a bump ... I talk,
shmooze, explain [the drinks to] cap-
puccino virgins." Often, Lewkow cor-
rects the popular misconception that
cappuccino must be fattening —lie
uses skim milk.
And, he tries to change attitudes.
In the Midwest, Lewkow has found
that people are hesitant to try some-
thing new. "Not too many people,
unless they're Italian, did cappucci-
no." ❑
