Number Of Jobless
On The Rise

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Unemployment
has risen dramatically among Druse
and Arabs in the past few months,
especially as a result of the closure of
textile factories.
Arab and Druse council heads
charged that thousands of people had
been thrown out of work, pushing the
jobless rate in the two communities
way above the national average.
There are some places, like Rahat
in the Negev and Ein Mahil, near
Nazareth, where the unemployment
rate is over 20 percent.

Geotek Sells
Numerous Assets

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The beleaguered
mobile telecommunications company
Geotek Communications has agreed
to sell its European wireless assets to
Telesystem International Wireless of
Montreal, Canada for $85 million,
CEO Yaron Eitan said.
Headquartered in New Jersey,
Geotek, which develops communica-
tions technologies for fleet operators
and their vehicles at its Yokneam-
based research and development site.
The company said the sale of its
European operations, including a
wireless network in the U.K. and a 50
percent stake in Terrafon Budelfunk's
network in Germany, would help the
company concentrate on improving
its business in America.
Geotek's mobile communications
systems offer two-way radio, cellular
phone, vehicle tracking, credit card
authorization and e-mail capabilities
to fleet operators.
The company will break even when
150,000 vehicles use Geotek's technol-
ogy, Eitan said. Currently the compa-
ny serves 15,000 users.
