other CCBs did away with those prob-

In the `80s, another new group of
anti-hypertensives was released, called
ACE inhibitors. These drugs reduced
the body's production of a very potent
hypertension-causing hormone,
angiotensin. In time, angiotensin has
been found to be a kind of miracle drug
for the circulation.
It is one of the best drugs we have
now to treat congestive heart failure,
and when administered to a heart-
attack victim, it helps the heart regain
strength. ACE inhibitors provide anoth-
er bonus: They retain potassium in the
body, making them an excellent partner
to use with diuretics.
Statistics have shown that controlling
hypertension with low-dose diuretics
decreases the incidence of heart attack,
stroke and congestive heart failure while
improving total mortality. Their proven

safety and effectiveness have made them
one of the first-line agents for treating
hypertension. They potentiate the effec-
tiveness of most other anti-hypertensive
drugs, and they are among the least
expensive prescription medications.
Beta blockers share the spotlight of
being a first-line anti-hypertensive med-
ication.
A large amount of research clearly
reveals that beta blockers protect heart-
attack victims from repeat heart attack,
prolong their lives and are effective ther-
apy for some nasty irregularities of the
heartbeat.
Ordinary CCBs, though more effec-
tive in controlling blood pressure, do
not share the side benefits of improved
cardiac health provided by diuretics and (___/
beta blockers. It is possible that the
slow-release forms of CCBs may be
more effective in these other arenas.
That research is not yet completed.
