In addition to increasing teen trav-

Among the top priorities are
developing standards and an accredi-

programs that currently exist and
developing post-trip educational

Jewish Education (AJE) was responsi-
ble for post-mission programming,
follow-up for the 1998 mission will be
coordinated by the Federation's
Michigan/Israel Connection. And
plans are underway to make it consid-
erably more far-reaching.
"I feel we failed from our first teen
mission to involve the kids after-
ward," said Steve Schanes, who is co-
• chairing Come Back Give Back, the
new committee that will coordinate
-follow-up activities for Israel
returnees.
"Several parents called to say that
it was a great trip but they'd thought
there would be more for the kids
afterward ... I'm not sure where it fell
through the cracks, but it's something
we don't want to let happen again.
C We don't want to lose any of the
kids."
Come Back Give Back will remain
in close touch with youth returning
from Israel, encouraging them to par-
ticipate in community volunteer
activities and a day of learning on
Judaism and Israel. Other plans
under consideration include a website
and radio station for Israel returnees
along with opportunities to dialogue
with local Arab teens.
On a national level, the Israel
Experience Inc. also plans to step up
post-Israel programming, and
JESNA's Vernon says he is monitor-
ing the success of experimental efforts
in various communities. •
While it is too soon to measure
4 long-term impact of the 1996 mis-
sion, the Federation's Aronson says
some research was done in the imme-
diate aftermath of the mission and
"early signs are positive."
He added that a Jewish Agency-
coordinated longitudinal study of
Federation's teen missions will be
conducted in 5-10 years. ❑

The trip begins in s
North America and continues in
North Anaerica when participants
return. If we fail to give a context,
the trip itself is less meaningful," says
Schindler, adding that a full report
on the subject will be released next
November,
But the first step is getting the
attention of Jewish teens and their
pa.rents.
"For most North American Jewish
kids, an Israd experience just is not
on their radar screen, says Schindler.

Placing Israel on the radar screen
appears to be somewhat of a chal-
lenge for the Detroit Jewish commu
nity as well. While funding is avail-
able for 360 teens to participate in
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit-subsidized Teen
Mission To Israel, only 240 have
signed up so far.
