Marvin
Weingarden has
joined the faculty
of Madonna
University in
Livonia as a full-
time assistant
professor in the
mathematics
department. Prior
to joining
Marvin
Madonna
Weingarden
University, he
worked for the
Detroit Public Schools where he began
his career in mathematics in 1961. He
also has taught at Wayne State
University, the University of Detroit-
_ Mercy and Oakland Community
College. A past president of the
Detroit Area Council of Teachers of
Mathematics, he currently serves on
the board of directors.
Dr. Mark Diem will be presented the
1997 Distinguished Alumni Award by
Wayne State University at the
December commencement. Dr. Diem
chairman of the Dean of Liberal
Arts Advisory Board.
Lissa Levine graduated from
Accademia Italiana Arte, Moda, and
Design in Florence, Italy, with a
degree in fashion design. She was fur-
ther recognized with special certifica-
tion by the European Union.

coordinator for
the city of Oak
Park, were invited
to showcase
Vertical Eye
Watch at the
annual meeting of
the National
League of Cities
in Oklahoma.

new board mem-
bers of the Jewish
Theological Seminary, will serve as
policy consultants to, and financial
supporters of the school.
This Chanukah,
Giving a
Mandell Berman, a Detroit busi-
ness executive, has been prominent in
Jewish and civic affairs for much of his
adult life. He is a past president of the
Council of Jewish Federations, the
umbrella organization of more than
two hundred federations in North
America, and as such serves on the
boards of JESNA (Jewish Education
Service of North America); JDC
(American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee) and UIA (United Israel
Appeal). Until recently, he also served
on the boards of the Jewish Agency
and the World Zionist Education
Authority.
Additionally, he has endowed the
Mandell L. Berman Center at the
University of Michigan Hillel and
contributes to the Jerusalem Center
for Public Affairs at Temple
University, to Bar Ilan University in
Israel, where he chairs the executive
committee, and to Brandeis
University. There is -also a center
named in his honor at the North
American Jewish Data Bank at the
City University of New York. His
philanthropic endeavors have been
recognized with awards throughout his
lifetime, most recently with the
Human Relations Award at the
Interfaith Round Table in 1997.
Mr. Berman and his wife,
Madeleine, have a son and a daughter
and two grandchildren.
Joel E. Jacob has participated on
the boards of a host of local, national
and international organizations, both
Jewish and secular. Among the affilia-
tions of which he is most proud are
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Bar Ilan University in Israel
and his synagogue, Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. He is
married to Lauren Jacob, a photogra-
pher. The couple has three young chil-
dren.
