adorning the homes of her gentile
neighbors. This is possible, she says
"because I don't feel envy or longing
anymore, for I know that my own
heritage is very rich."
Others using that same web site
argue that Jews shouldn't have any
problem celebrating Christmas which,
having lost its religious meaning, "is
an American celebration no different
from Thanksgiving and the Fourth of
July." Not so says another American,
Varda Cheskis Sauer, who says that
"she enjoys watching other people cel-
ebrate their holiday and decorate their
tree.

Russian
dominated
neighborhoods in
Israel have
numerous
Christmas trees.

"But," she adds, "I have no toler-
ance for Jewish people who have
allowed Christmas into their lives,
convincing themselves that it is an
American holiday. It isn't."
Aside from those Russian immi-
grants mentioned earlier, few Israelis
regard Christmas as their holiday. New
Year's Eve, however, is another matter.
A large percentage of the people here
go to New Year's parties, drink a lot
and kiss one another at midnight.
This bothers some of the
Orthodox, who refer to the holiday as
Sylvester (a 4th Century Catholic
saint whose "day" is December 31).
But since the only Sylvester most
Israeli have heard of is muscleman
Stallone, they see no reason not to
have a party on New Year's Eve. 0
