LINCOLN-MERCURY-MAZDA , or a group of Akiva and Hillel day school girls, there's an important rite of passage long before the bat mitzvah. First, it's becoming a Brownie Girl Scout. Then, in the fourth grade, it's time to "fly up" to the rank of Junior Girl Scout. Last week, Akiva!s Brownie troop and Hillel's Brownie and Junior troops came together for a shared cer- emony at which some ascended to the Junior level and others were inducted as Brownies. The celebration was capped by a round of the song, "Make New Friends, But Keep the Old." "The mission of Brownies and Girl Scouts is to help people at all times and promote values and ethics. It goes hand in hand with what these kids are learning at Hillel and Akiva," says Evelyn Rosen, troop leader. ❑ . Above: The girls close the ceremony by holding hands and singing.
