El Al, Air France In Link-Up Talks Jerusalem (JPFS) — El Al is to begin negotiations with Air France for a code-sharing agreement for flights between Tel Aviv and Paris, El Al spokesman Nachman Klieman said. The result of such negotiations would be a new schedule with alter- nating flights by the two companies. However, the flights of both com- panies would be listed as both El Al and Air France flights and would include passengers of both airlines. The two airlines are to assign committees to work together for commercial cooperation as well as code-sharing, Klieman said. However, he added that the per- ceived agreement fell short of a strategic alliance. He said that the benefit to the passengers would be that they would be able to fly to destinations not served by El Al, such as South America and Japan with better con- nection times. For the company, he said, the advantage lay in being able to offer customers a wider range of services. U.S. Rejects Airlines Agreement Jerusalem (JPFS) — The U.S. Department of Transport has reject- ed El Al's application to enter a code-sharing agreement with American Airlines, El Al announced. The company described the American governmental decision as "arbitrary," especially in view of the fact that it had approved a similar agreement between American Airlines and Saudia, the Saudi Arabian national airlines. El Al also said that a code-sharing agreement was primarily a matter to be decided between the airlines. Group To Aid PA economy Jerusalem (JPFS) — Members of the Israel-Britain Business Council pledged to work to aid the Palestinian economy through a series of measures approved in Tel Aviv. Top business people from the two countries met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to inform him of their desire to aid the peace process and to attract British investors to Israel. The organization was set up by former prime ministers John Major and Yitzhak Rabin and jointly chaired by Marks and Spencer Chairman Sir Richard Greenberry and Manufacturers Association President Dan Propper. The Israeli government already has approved 1998 funding for the IBBC, and a statement from the organization says it expects a similar move on the part of the British. Privatization Must Fund Budget Jerusalem (JPFS) — Education Minister Zevulun Hammer demand- ed some of this year's receipts from privatization be used to prevent cuts to funding for health care, child allowances and the education bud- get.
