tanding on a bridge in New
Hope, Pa., it feels like a
world apart, this tranquil area
of river banks, rolling hills,
covered bridges, winding country
roads and quaint bed and breakfast
inns.
No wonder Bucks County, Pa., has
become such a popular tourist destina-
tion — so popular, in fact, that the New
York Times travel section recently devot--
ed a full page feature to the area. In any
season, this wooded area of
Pennsylvania has varied charms, which
first attracted Broadway writers and
musicians such as Dorothy Parker,
Moss ,Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Lilli
Lillian
Hellman, Edna Ferber and others.
Many writers and artists have made
their permanent homes here. Pearl
Buck lived in an 1835 farmhouse in
the county. James Michener also lived
here for decades and founded the
James A. Michener Art Museum in
Doylestown, the county seat.
The attractions which drew them
also lure modern tourists. Bucks
County is just one hour from
Philadelphia and barely two from New
York, and it's an idyllic rural retreat
with varied attractions for a weekend
or day-trip getaway.
On our recent visit, for instance,
we boarded the New Hope-Ivyland
train for a scenic 50-minute ride
through the countryside. We rode in
an old-fashioned coach pulled by a
1925 Baldwin steam locomotive which
chugged its way in leisurely style.
Along the way, we were treated to a
lively narrative about the highlights
and history of the area.
Founded in 1681 and now a regis-
tered National Historic Site, New
Hope became the center of an art
colony which helped make Bucks
County famous.
And it continues to draw many
tourists, who stroll the streets lined
with antique shops, art galleries, cafes
and sophisticated restaurants. Even an c-
old-fashioned ice cream parlor was the
focus of an article in Gourmet magazine.
New Hope has added interest for
Jewish travelers. During our visit, we
enjoyed the flavor of a Jewish-owned
historic inn and also saw a small and
thriving riverside congregation.
Our New Hope "home" for the
