ular clients who, after years and years of
visiting clinics and going to physical
therapy, find that relaxation is their best
solution to chronic pain."
Southfield-based trial attorney Leslie
Stein considers the spa her ultimate
tonic. "Massages," says the stressed-out
lawyer, "are like a drug."
At Tamara's Institut de Beaute in
Farmington Hills, throngs of clients are
seeking relief from skin problems, soar
feet and achy bodies. Taking care of
▪
yourself from a health perspective is
what beauty is all about, says the day
spa's owner, Tamara Friedman.
"Everyone's running after this dream
that there is going to be a miracle skin
cream," she says.. "It's really how you
take care of your skin."
Stein goes to Tamara's so often that
she should have her name engraved on
her manicure chair. For 20 years, the
▪
lawyer has scheduled regular appoint-
ments for manicures (weekly), pedi-
cures, facials and massages.
"It's like maintenance for your body.
You do it for your car, you should do it
for yourself," says Stein, who's in her
late `40s. "I'm a professional woman
and I want to look polished ... like
clothes that are well-tailored."
Nordstrom's Mackie says that today,
more than ever before, people are taking
a beating to not only their bodies, but
their spirits as well. Friedman agrees.
"People are under so much stress, pres-
sure. You walk out of your office and
there are three people on hold for you
and 10 messages on your desk. We are
killing ourselves," says Friedman, whose
spa recently underwent remodeling.
Unwinding for spa and salon clients
▪ means everything from luxuriating in a
throne-like, vibrating pedicure chair
and relaxing beneath a funneled oil-drip
body treatment to absorbipg a fruity
skin application.
Perhaps the Wizard of Oz's Tin Man
had the right idea. What better way to
remain flexible than with oil? Salone
Nadwa's niftiest treatment, the
Ayurzedic rejuvenation massage, stimu-
ID laces the scalp, ears, head, body and
more by way of an overhead funnel that
drips one pleasurable bead of special oil
at a time.
"It's a 300-year-old treatment," says
Breda, whose employee, Star, has mas-
tered the $75-application.
A long list of facial options can con-
fuse even the most spa-savvy customers.
For clients over 50, the choices can be
even more baffling.
At Mira Linder's Spa in the City in
Southfield, staffers recommend that
older first-time clients should book a
decleansing facial and then speak with
one of the professionals on site who can
analyze your skin. Breda at Salone
Nadwa recommends the Collagen facial
or the Alpha Lift treatment.
Edith Gertsmark's Salon Papillon in
West Bloomfield offers a new French
treatment that features fruit enzymes.
"One should book three of these treat-
ments in one month to benefit," advises
Gertsmark.
The three pedicure "thrones" at
Salone Nadwa in Novi are almost
always in use during the salon's operat-
ing hours. The day spa's most popular
service, a foot treatment involves a
relaxing foot soak in a mini hot-tub,
vibrating high-back chairs that energize
from the ankles up and relaxing, albeit
vigorous, massage and reflexology tech-
niques. Breda says they're the perfect
remedy for older folks with lots of
stress. "Your whole body operates based
on how your feet feel," Breda says.
At the recently remodeled Salon
Papillon, pedicure clients use four foot
stations. Gertsmark says pedicures pick
up during vacation season, summers
and holidays. On some days,
Gertsmark's pedicurists will polish and
buff up to 30 feet.
Nordstrom patrons in their 50s and
60s often request the spa's hot paraffin
dips for feet (and hands) because of
arthritis problems. Says spa director
Mackie, "It's a tremendous relief, even
for just a few days." ❑

F
or men, the world of spas
and beauty salons was pret-
ty much a secret universe
up until this decade. Sure it
was somewhat common to see a man
receive a pedicure or bodywra.p in the
more trendier cities like New York or
Los Angeles, but in Michigan men at
spas were as scarce as steaks at a vege-
tarian convention.
Nowadays it's not uncommon to
overhear men at social gatherings dis-
cussing the latest French skin treat-
ments, foot reflexology and other
pampering topics.
Nadwa Breda, owner of Salone
Nadwa in Novi, says her spa revenues
have grown by 50 percent in the last
year due in part to an increase in
male clientele.
"Men are into facials and foot
,,
treatments here, says Breda. "They
are beginning to realize that spas
aren't just for pampering, but for
health reasons, too."
In fact, says Breda, men need some
treatments more often than women,
especially pedicures. "Men's skin is
thicker, tougher and dryer," she says.
"They need foot treatments."
Breda says from her list of 15 facial
choices, the oily skin facial is often
chosen by men with adult acne, "It's
deep cleansing," she says.
The most-often chosen spa treat-
Ment for men is the massage. "They'll
try a massage before a facial," says
Breda, noting that massages are great
thr men in-volved in sports or for
those who sit at a computer for long
periods of time
Tamara Friedman, owner of
Tamara's Institut de Beaute in
Farmington Hills, says she sees "tons
of men padding around in her day
spa. "Facials, massages, manicures,
pedicures -- you name it," she says of
the popular male treatment prefer-
ences.
'Tears ago, a man wouldn't be
caught dead having a pedicure. Now
you see them getting their eye brows
painted, getting something waxed,
whatever, she says. Friedman, who's
hosted local attorney Geoffrey Fieger,
composer Marvin Hamlisch and
comedian Tim Allen, notes that
today's society pages and Hollywood
publications prove that aging men
can be beautiful. "You see a picture of
Sylvester Stallone. He looks fit, gor-
geous," she says.
"Everyone wants to know how to
look younger," she adds. The spa may
be a good place to start. ❑
