CONSIDER LIPOSUCTION INSTEAD

hardly remember whose stuff is whose.
Buying, remodeling, and furnishing
was wonderful bonding for us — all
the pleasing and compromises and
negotiations."
According to Carol, "Choosing a
mutual place unconsciously equalized
our power, strengthened our relation-
ship, and gave us a sense of self-
expression and continuity. I also
learned you don't need to put so
much money in everything. This
place symbolizes us individually and
together.
"At this lifestage, putting lives
together calls for being openminded
and not predisposed in thinking. The
longer you live alone, the easier it is to
get stuck in your ways.
"Marty and I are like an intercul-
tural blend — we came from two dif-
ferent cultures and backgrounds and
we're both senior citizens looking for-
ward to aging together. This lifespace
is our new reality, our history. Home
is our anchor and it feels right." ❑

Birmingham, then 74, decided to do.
"We used our 50s to prepare for the
realities of life and of death," says
Gilda. "Neither of us wanted to leave
the other with the burden of selling
and getting rid of everything by them-
selves. We downsized our lifespace to
spare each other that trauma and
hardship."
To prepare for the move, the
Birminghams gave a party for friends
and neighbors and asked them to take
many of their belongings. "We wanted
them to have a part of us," she says.
"Besides, John and I had such fun
shopping and decorating together.
When John died two years later, I was
so grateful we had done this for each
other. I dread thinking how over-
whelmed I would have been if we had
still been in our home and I had been
left to face the move alone.
"We did consider aging when we
moved. We wanted a place that would
support our optimal physical capacity
should something happen healthwise."
A year after her husband died,
Gilda moved into a larger condo. She
believes "aging enhances your desire to
be active, to enjoy, to have responsibil-
ities, but eliminate burdens."
Marty and Carol Gorosh bought
bigger space than they needed after
many years of living as singles. "We
were so used to having our own space,
knowing we needed both individual
and mutual spaces. We just like each
other's presence, but not necessarily
sitting together. For us, it's easier to
handle more space than not enough,"
says Marty.
"Change doesn't concern us. We
have dealt with divorce and relocation
... true displacement, physically and
emotionally, but we've learned that let-
ting go is very nurturing and liberat-
ing.
"Carol and I considered our future
aging and knew this condo was flexi-
ble and could be readapted to our
needs. We also realize the older we get
the shorter the time, so why devote it
to things that don't provide satisfac-
tion, nourishment, and enrichment?"
The move was a stressful time for
the Goroshes. "We had time restraints
and a high level of attachment, espe-
cially Carol. She loves to see and
touch her stuff," says Marty. "We
combined our stuff and today can
