Chanukah Fun For Kids:
Do-It-Yourself Projects
JUDITH SELLNER
Special to The Jewish News
iaspora Jews sometimes for-
get that Chanukah started
out as a serious observance
of the miracle of endurance
— the few Maccabees' endurance
against the soldiers of King Antiochus.
One day's oil supply's endured for
eight days and ultimately the
endurance of Judaism.
Here are some hands-on activities
in a batch of new, do-it-yourself prod-
ucts for Chanukah which can give the
holiday extra Jewish meaning. Most of
the items can be assembled by chil-
dren with adult supervision, making
the creations a family project. Keep in
mind the need for adult supervision
— especially for those products with
small pieces.
The Dreidel Piñata Kit is fun to
put together and knock apart as a
great party attraction. The package
contains the makings of two pinatas:
dreidel-shaped yellow cardboard paint-
ed with a festive design for the shell,
and supplies for the children's creative
decorating, including outlines of the
dreidel's four Hebrew letters, tissue
paper for rosettes, glitter, ribbon,
water colors, and glue.
The Dreidelmaker Fun Kit consists
of a triple mold, into which the child
places colored Play-dough/clay and
presses the mold together. With the
enclosed cutting knife and instruc-
tions, the child creates three dreidels.
To make more, one can get more Play-
dough.
Children can make their own
menorot (with adult help) from either
of two kits. The basic kit contains the
41 stainless steel pieces that make the
menorah, using the family tools. The
deluxe kit includes the same pieces
along with the required tools and spe-
cial paints to add color.
Sand Expressions consists of three
adhesive-backed boards with a dreidel,
Star of David and menorah designs.
With no glue and no mess, youngsters
can create colorful holiday art by
applying the colored sand provided in
the package to the boards, following
the suggested colors.
Jewish Sand Art, a similar product,
Judith Broder Sellner is a New York
_freelance writer.
0
contains four pre-cut designs — a
menorah for Chanukah, three for
other holidays. The child peels off a
little section of the picture exposing
the adhesive underneath, pours the
indicated color of sand — or his own
choice of color — and continues peel- „)
ing off small sections until the picture
is finished.
Sparkle Magic is a sticker art, and
its procedure is somewhat similar to
the Sand Pictures but with a very dif-
ferent result. This product consists of
four sheets of pre-cut sparkle magic
stickers, four pieces of film, and four
Jewish picture boards (one is a meno-
rah) with color-coded backgrounds 0,
like color-by-numbers.

The Dreidel Piñata kit promises hours of
fin. Available at Esther's Judaica, West
Bloomfield.
Make It and Bake It with Beads
requires adult participation. The kit
contains a metal outline of a menorah
and a package of multi-colored baking
crystals. The outline is placed on a
cookie sheet or heavy-duty aluminum
foil, then filled with the baking crys-
tals in the child's coloi. preferences.
The entire object is baked in the oven
for about 25 minutes while the crys-
tals melt down. The result is a beauti,
ful menorah that looks like stained
glass.
Jewish Sun Catchers are plastic
designs that children paint. The kit
includes four containers of paint, a
