Christmas .-. ongregating Something for young Jews to do on the eve of nothing open. t's Christmas Eve. Nothing's open — unless you want to hang out at a gas station. You're sick of cramming into Chinese restaurants with loads of other bored Jews, then stampeding to the movies. What are you going to do aside from count the minutes until the mall re-opens? Well, some Jewish groups in metro Detroit are teaming up to give you "Something to Talk About" — that's the name of the bash on Christmas Eve at the Modern Rock Cafe in Walled Lake. If you're 18 or older, you're invited. • Since the usual Christmas Eve gath- ering at the Jewish Community - Center is not happening this year, the B'nai B'rith Leadership Network, Hillel of Metro Detroit, The Jewish News and the Modern Rock Cafe are stepping up and trying to offer some- thing better. "This is not your average run-of- the-mill dance we have every year," vowed B'nai B'rith's Beth Davidow. Planners are promising a variety of ways to have fun on Christmas Eve — without caroling or putting popcorn strings on prickly trees. "You'll be able to do anything from sitting and talking [with friends] in the club's coffeehouse, to [shaking it up on] the high-energy dance floor, to shooting a game of pool and munch- ing on snacks [kosher, of course]," Davidow hypes. All that for 10 bucks at the door. The Modern Rock Cafe usually caters to the under-21 crowd, so there won't be any alcohol. If you get thirsty, pop will have to suffice. But why is this Christmas Eve party for Jews different from all other Christmas Eve parties for Jews? Location, location, location. The Modern Rock Cafe at Pontiac Trail and Decker, says Davidow, is truly a unique place. It's huge — can pack in up to 1,000 — it's got a great sound system plus coffeehouse, video games and a chic warehouse atmos- phere. So there you have it. If you can't stand It's a Wonderful Life, you've had C enough family time, or if you get so restless you just need to let loose, you know where to go on Christmas Eve. — Matt Mossman ❑ SINGLES TRAVEL JANUARY Jan. 10-17 eSs Skiing, Big Sky, Montana.
