As related by the prophets and in the legends of the Aggadah, we are destined to witness repetition of this pattern — first Joseph, then Judah — one final time. At the "end of days," the Messiah descended from Joseph will lead the war against and consume the forces of Esau. Unfortunately, he also will lose his life. This will pave the way for the Messiah descended from David to lead us into the ultimate and long awaited era of redemption. The Torah portion of Vayeshev is a lot like a lego set. Many little pieces — like family squabbles, human passion, characters and personalities, as well as big pieces — like kings, nations, wars, exile and redemption are put togeth- er and taken apart by God, over and over again, to form the tapestry that is both our history and our destiny. The pattern inherent in God's plans stretch over millennia, from the beginning of time to its end. It includes every person and thing. The designer of Lego kits knows that all of those little pieces can be properly connected to create pirate * ships, space stations and medieval castles. God likewise knows that when his pieces are all finally put together properly, they will embody and represent the very Torah that was their schematic. May we merit tol see the day when mankind unites to help make the world match the pic- ture drafted by our designer! ❑ Chanukah Downtown The Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue annual Chanukah party will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the synagogue building, 1457 Griswold, Detroit.
