Anti-Racist Rally
In New Zealand

Sydney, Australia (JTA) — The fight
against hate crime has spread to New
Zealand.
The country's Jewish community,
spurred by a large increase in racist
attacks, hosted a rally in the capital of
Wellington with the aim of developing
a strategy to stop racist groups.
Among those addressing the rally
were three members of Parliament and
a national race relations official.
In recent weeks, a number of attacks
on refugees and immigrants from Asia,
Africa and the Middle East -- along
with the emergence of a neo-Nazi
group known as Unit 88 — have
gained prominent coverage in the
media and focused attention on skin-
head groups.
There are some 5,000 Jews living in
New Zealand.

Knesset Desires
Pollard's Release

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The Knesset sent
out a strong call for the release of
Jonathan Pollard. The matter was
raised by several MKs as a motion to
the agenda and united the House.
Four ministers — Natan Sharansky,
Yuli Edelstein, Ariel Sharon and
Moshe Katsav — were present, an
unusually high turnout.
Edelstein, who recently visited
Pollard in prison, said he hopes to see
him here for the country's 50th
anniversary celebrations. He said
Pollard had called on Israel to act more
on his behalf, saying that the United
States will not release him if Israel is
not more active in demanding it, 1]

President Hafez Assad wants peace but
