but also some on-the-record ones, to
the effect that Sara Netanyahu is an
imperious, insulting First Lady, and a
constant headache to her husband
and his staff, who constantly have to
cover up for her.
A couple of dozen anecdotes were
presented. For example, after a singer
on a TV talk/variety show casually
touched the prime minister, seated
next to her on the panel, Sara, wait-
ing backstage, began shouting in
anger. When her husband went back
to try to calm her, Sara raised her
hands as if to strike him. Netanyahu
took her hands and Sara, according
to a source, told him, "Let go of my
hands or I'll tell the police that you
beat me."
This is Israel, so not everyone, of
course, came out in support of the
Netanyahus. Doron Neuberger, who is
divorced from Sara after six years of
marriage, and who has written a book
about the experience that Sara is trying
to prevent from being published, said
he was not surprised by the revelations.

Even with such
stories, this prime
minister probably
won't be
politically hurt.

Another damaging response came
from Sara's brother, Haggai Ben-
Artzi. "The array of facts is too
weighty to be completely fabricated.
These facts demand a fearless, honest
public debate to clarify what's behind
them. An examination of this sort is
necessary because at issue are public
funds and the functioning of public
figures," he said.
Labor Party Knesset members
have called for a Knesset debate on
the matter, and a State Comptroller's
investigation into Sara Netanyahu's
use of public funds.
Yet Prime Minister Netanyahu has
been involved in embarrassing scan-
dals before and weathered them,
often gaining support in the process,
especially when his accusers have
been the media.
And when anything is amiss in his
marriage, no matter who's fault it is,
Netanyahu has managed to come out

unscathed, at least publicly. During
the campaign for the Likud primary.
in 1993, he went on national TV
and admitted having been unfaithful
to Sara, but presented himself as the
victim of a plot to blackmail him
into quitting the primary race. It
worked; by the time Netanyahu's
barely-veiled accusations against rival
David Levy proved unfounded,
Netanyahu had already won his
party's election.
Rafik Halaby, editor of Israel TV's
Channel 1, listed a few of the con-
troversies that have swirled around
Netanyahu, including the recent,
stormy Likud convention, the failed
assassination attempt of a Hamas
leader in Jordan, the Bar-On Affair
and the opening of the Hasmonean
Tunnel, Halaby said, "Does arrybody*
still remember them? Likewise,
the Sara story will have a very short
life."
Still, it's not a bad read. ❑

Poland Removes
Auschwitz Cro s ses

New York (JTA) — Jewish groups
are claiming victory in the latest bat-
tle at Auschwitz.
Under orders from the Polish gov-
ernment, eight crosses and 11 Stars
of David were removed from the
grounds of the Nazi death camp.
The religious symbols were placed
at the former Nazi death camp in
1983 by a Polish scouting group.
The campaign to rid Auschwitz of
the symbols gained steam last year,
when the issue was raised by Elie
Wiesel at a ceremony commemorat-
ing the 50th anniversary of a pogrom
in the Polish town of Kielce.
The crosses have been given to a
local church, and the Stars of David
will be given to a Jewish archive in
the nearby city of Krakow.
