and cutting-edge technology this year
through a partnership with a corn-
purer firm called Techno Masters.
Rabbi Eli Mayerfeld, executive
director of Beth Yehudah, says his
institution (which includes the girls'
school Sally Allan Alexander Beth
Jacob) hopes to upgrade its computers
through the E-rate subsidies, but is
holding off on applying for Internet
access.
"We're not yet satisfied with the
sophistication of the system to be able
to use the Internet productively," said
Mayerfeld, adding that the disorga-
nized nature of the Internet means
users must wade through a lot of mis-
nformation and face the challenge of
evaluating the accuracy of information
culled in cyberspace.
"You have a lot of information
that's inaccurate, incomplete or not
meaningful," he says.
Currently, the 755-student Beth
Yehudah has 5-0 computers that run
Windows 3.1 and range in age from
two to five years old, says Mayerfeld.
,Students utilize computers to learn
basic computer skills classes, practice
math and do some Hebrew projects.
Mayerfeld, who hopes E-rate subsi-
dies will enable the school to
upgrade to Windows 95 and install
network drivers, routers and hubs,
estimates that about a third of Beth
Yehudah students have computers at
home.
c: Like Beth Yehudah, the 140-stu-
dent Yeshiva Gedolah has no imme-
diate plans to go on the Internet.
According to secular studies Principal
David Wayntraub, the boys — who
already put in over 12 hours a day in
the classroom and beit midrash — do
not have time to use the Internet.
Yeshiva Gedolah has 10 computers
ranging in age from one to two years
ld and offers weekly classes for 9th-
llth graders, teaching word process-
ing, database management and spread-
sheets. The school also is considering
using computers in some science and
math classes, such as probability and
statistics.
No national statistics are available
on computer use in Jewish day
schools or supplemental schools, says
'-,:aren Levine, director of media and
technology for the Jewish Education
Service of North America (JESNA).
However, JESNA may commission
such a study in the coming years and
is developing programs that will
enable Jewish educators to share
information and computer-related
curricula via the Internet. E
