"Families in which one of the par-
ents has converted often are more
engaged, but what is disappointing is
that despite that involvement, grown
children of those unions have much
higher rates of intermarriage them-
selves," he said.
Also disturbing, said Wertheimer,
was the discovery that few b'nai or
b'not mitzvah list Jewish women
among their "Jewish heroes."
More encouraging was the finding
that every succeeding generation of
affiliated Conservative Jews has a
greater level of Jewish education than
the preceding one, with more than
half of the under-35 set exposed to
serious Jewish learning, involved at
some point in USY, active in campus
Jewish life, and having visited Israel
before the age of 22.
Although only 38 percent of
American Jews identify as
Conservative, Conservative Jews
comprise the majority of synagogue
members, said Wertheimer, adding
that only 43 percent of American
Jews are synagogue members at any
given moment.
While Wertheimer said the study
pointed to areas that require further
exploration, Schorsch was somewhat
vague as to the practical implications
of the research.
"The policies for the 21st century
spring right out of the research," he
said, adding that "inspiration for the
[William] Davidson School of
Education is coming out of this
study."
Although the current study focuses
solely on Conservative synagogue
members, Schorsch said that many of
its findings — particularly on the
centrality of the home in forming
Jewish identity — are relevant to all
American Jews.
Although. the movement has
no immediate plans to research
unaffiliated Jews, Schorsch said that
outreach to unaffiliated Jews is a
top priority and hopes to bring in
new members by encouraging syna-
gogues to become better at commu-
nity-building and at providing
meaningful text-based adult educa-
tion.
Schorsch hopes JTS launches a
research project on the impact of the
Conservative movement's Camp
Ramah network.
