his own mouth that intend to bite
with their contemporary candor but,
more often, offend. The harder Allen
tries to be hip in his Harry repartee,
the more he appears passe, even piti-
ful.
If only Allen could have exercised
enough restraint to stay on the other
side of the camera or, better yet,
appear in the cast as yet another char-
acter pissed off by Harry's (and con-
sequently, Allen's) own literary mis-
representation, he might have really
blown the lid off the post-Pirandello
genre.

DETROIT
JEWISH NEWS

As it stands, one can only wonder
whether Allen is finally trying to
depict himself as the crude, lecher-
ous, perennially juvenile misogynist
that Mia Farrow and a good part of
the media have portrayed him as. If
so, hopefully Deconstructing Harry
will allow chronic Allen defamers and
even Allen himself to exorcise those
demons, so we can all get back to
what made him such a genius in the
first place.
