DECONSTRUCTING HARRY
If we deconstruct Deconstructing
Harry, we are left with the typical

components of any Woody Allen
sojourn into celluloid:
1. We have his requisite cast of
neurotics and co-dependents, resplen-
dent in their mania;
2. We get Manhattan as a back-
drop, looming and poetic;
3. As the capper (and as in 98 per-
cent of Woody Allen's films), we get
Woody himself — unraveled, frayed
and nearly as pulled out of shape and
flea-bitten as every crew-neck sweater
he apparently owns.

Mind you, it is all comforting in a
way. Much like Xanax is for panic --
attacks.
If only Allen could get the requi-
site dosage right, as in Hannah and
Her Sisters or Crimes and

Misdemeanors.
At times, Deconstructing Harry is
effective, at least almost. Serving as
the cornerstone of Deconstructing's
foundation is Harry Block (Woody_
Allen), the name itself suggesting the
Toy-like character composi-
tion the film aims to pick apart, piece
by piece.
Harry is a successful writer

The New York Times Magazine
recently moderated and published a
discussion between two great direc-
tors: Woody Allen and Martin
Scorcese. They met in Scorcese's
Park Avenue offices on a Saturday
afternoon, which also happened to
be Yom Kippur. Woody Allen had
the following to say about his latest
film, Deconstructing Harry:
"With my latest movie,
Deconstructing Harry, which I
wanted to call "The Meanest Man
in the World," I wrote it, and I
would have hoped someone else
would have played the lead role. It's
boring for me to play it all the

time. Its more fun for me to direct
now and then and not have to
shave every day. But I couldn't get
anybody else. I was my last choice.
Until three weeks before we shot, I
was sweating to get somebody else
and couldn't do it I offered it to a
half-dozen people and could not
work it out for one reason or
another with them, and so I finally '
did it.
And there is no question: They'll
think I am the character. But they
think that in everything I do. I don't
care. That is one of the curses of
what I do. That is why they come or
why they stay away." Li
