NEW ON CD It takes a ton of audacity to release an album with precisely two new tracks and position it as something new, a must-have, an event. But that's exactly what the newly re-formed Jane's Addiction has done with Kettle Whistle (Warner Bros.). Perry Farrell and Co., of course, have audacity to spare. As well they should. The Jane's Addiction live show was part seance, part orgy, part explosion. It was like a harmonic convergence of heavy metal, punk and gospel, and no one who ever attended one of its concerts could ever forget it. - In keeping with its contemporary leg- end, the mostly live, mostly heard-before Kettle Whistle is crowded with outtakes and demos and concert per- ,formances, and yet it still has a magical quality. A smol- dering rendi- tion of "Jane Says," recorded in 1991 at Irvine Meadows in Orange County, Calif., is a singu- lar sensation,, a tribute to the group's ability to simultaneously caress cold calculation and feverish abandon. A quartet of songs TWO HOMEMADE SOUPS SERVED DAILY recorded at the Hollywood Palladium in 1990 make me wish I had been there. Behind Farrell's high-pitched, overly echoed voice, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins always seem to find the appropriate chords and rhythms to express their hedonistic bent. The two new songs — the title track and "So What!" — are marked- 'ly different. "Kettle 'Whistle" is pon- derous and meditative and seems as though it was written for Farrell's other band, Porno for Pyros. "So What!," on the other hand, flat out rocks. It epitomizes the stop-start brilliance of Jane's early work. mtafisZ r v- swiwN, . BROILED LAKE SUPERIOR WHITEFISH 12 OZ.
