is a dark Friday morning and as
they wait for the other families
to arrive, carpool driver Cherie
Guttman is helping her first-
grade son Jared memorize a Hebrew
prayer.
Guttman was born in the United
States, but has lived in Windsor
almost all her life. She and her hus-
band, Neal, who grew up in Win-
nipeg, attended public schools and
studied Hebrew through their syna-
gogues, but "it wasn't enough," says
Guttman.-
"In Windsor, there's no Conserva-
tive synagogue and there aren't a lot of
Jewish families. You can become
assimilated, and we didn't want that
,
for our children."
Sam Kamen is the other carpool •
chauffeur today. Although Kamen was
born and bred in Windsor, his wife,
Karen, is from Livonia, so Richie has
dual citizenship. When the Ontario
school system underwent reorganiza-
tion last year, they decided to try out
Hillel.
"Hillel offers excellent English edu-
cation and the Hebrew education was
a bonus, so it was a win-win situa-
tion," says Kamen. "They lose the
Canadian content: learning about their
country, its history and French, but
now they're fluent in Hebrew, so it's a
tradeoff "
Even the American citizens in the
carpool play the role of Canadian
ambassador in the classroom. "Some-
times in social studies class, the subject
of Canada comes up and I take out —)
my Canadian money to show every-
one," says sixth-grader Shoshana
Brownstein, an American citizen who
has lived in Windsor for three years.
And at Blake Orman's request, Fran
Fine's kindergarten classroom displays
not only the American and Israeli
flags, but the Canadian maple leaf.
Kamen says when he and his wife
enrolled Richie, they had their doubt7
about the commute and tuition, but
now they're so pleased they plan to
enroll their four-year-old daughter,
Sarah, next year. "If it's important
enough, you find a way to do it," says
Kamen. El
