I certainly hope you've gotten over that by now, and your young- sters are not only doing the dishes they're mopping the floor and washing the windows and prepar- ing a gourmet dinner for you each night. Of course, you might like a little variety from those steak-with-mush- room-and-wine-sauce meals you've EUROPEAN COLLECTIONS WEST BLOOMFIELD (248) 626-3362 SOUTHFIEID (248) 559-7818 It's The Miracle: Chanukah Songs For The Whole Family 31543 W. 13 MILE RD. 12/12 1997 FARMINGTON HILLS (248) 553-4867 by Allan Lieberman (LeBeau Productions) been having. Here's just the thing. The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Children's Cookbook is filled with ter- rific, easy recipes, simple instructions and great illus- trations for every young Julia Child or Molto Mario. There is information about how to use the oven, how to measure ingredients and how to peel fruits and veg- etables. Best of all, though, are the recipes, which give guidelines on exactly how and when to do everything, and how long it will take. Though simple, these aren't the run-of-the-mill dish- es you find in a children's cookbook. Some of the recipes plan to make my own children pre- pare include herb-and-cheese scrambled eggs, overnight French toast, grilled cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, mini-muffeletta When it comes to Jewish children's music there are a few singers who never miss the mark (like Debbie Friedman), a few whose music resonates with the har- mony of a dentist's drill, and a large contingent whose recordings are okay, but nothing to write home about. This tape falls in that latter category. It doesn't take much imagination•to guess what the songs are about: the Maccabbees, latkes, long- lasting oil, a menorah. Sometimes, Lieberman's lyrics are just terrific — education- al, but fun enough to please chil- dren of all ages. One of these is all about Israeli donuts: "Soufganyiot, soufganyiot/If you live in North Dakota don't forget your coat/Take one on the boat, if you drop it will float/Excuse me sandwiches and layered vegetable bake. Though this is not a kosher cook- book, there's only one recipe for pork and nothing combining meat and cheese, so it's certain to please everyone. ‘– if I dote on soufganyiot." But the music is often bland, and after a while one song sounds like the next. It's too bad, too, that Mr. Lieberman couldn't muster more enthusiasm for his own songs. He has a nice voice, but his style is more likely to quiet little ones down that get them excited for the holiday. 4q Better you should watch reruns of "Three's Company." k\me Is this the best they could do? k‘okot,v Nothing great, nothing awful. wvkviv Try it, you'll like it. gotwv‘otp Meeee0000w!
