This project was started approxi- mately a year ago with funding from a generous anonymous donor and cur- rently is being funded by a matching grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan. We are proud to have distributed 2,592 dolls to five area hospitals as of this date. The dolls serve a dual function; first to act as a medical teaching tool for use by medical staff to communicate proce- dures to the patients and second, to allow children to draw on the doll, show where they hurt, "insert" needles and IV lines and to comfort small patients. Over 200 Hadassah volunteers have worked on this project as well as com- munity groups ranging from Girl Scouts to senior residents from Prentis and Teitel apartments. It is truly won- derful to see so many people contribut- ing their time and energy to the com- munity. Bloomfield Hills http://www.metroguide.com/lynne Council Steps Were Aggressive The authors of the two letters you pub- lished in the Dec. 4 Jewish News ("Public Outcry All Too Rare" and "Guidelines Were Ignored"), criticized the Jewish Community Council and its executive director David Gad-Harf regarding the Channel 56 controversy. They must have missed your Aug. 29 itlf) issue, which con- J• q 0 tained an article outlining the aggressive steps 4-- taken by the Council to confront `-'4Y d y • t. the television station's decision to air "The People and the Land." Due to Council's efforts, Channel 56 received an unprecedented outpouring of mail, phone calls and other communications protesting the station's decisions. The Council was approached about • joining the boycott of Channel 56 many weeks after the events occurred. Our board of 54 community represen- tatives thoroughly debated the efficacy of joining such an effort so long after the eyent .giving rise to the proposed boycott occurred. Without opposition, the board deter- mined that Council should not join this effort because people who were familiars with the issue already made their deci- sions to continue or withhold their financial support of Channel 56. By the time Council was approached and the coalition supporting the boycott took its action, Channel 56 had clearly heard the voices of the Jewish community and had begun taking the steps necessary to ensure an incident like this would not happen again. • By acting swiftly and effectively, Council served the best interests of this Jewish community and began the process of changing the way Channel 56 does business. Joining this boycott would not have added anything to what Council had already accomplished. Howard I. Wallach President, Jewish Community Council! All Letters Fit To Print? Is The Jewish News obligated to print all letters from malcontents? Why would you print letters negative to people like David Hermelin and David Gad-Harf and organizations like 1- 0. the ADL? These are people who work for the betterment of the Jewish people on a daily basis. As the recipient of one of these let- ters a few months ago from a jealous and uninformed person, I am heartbro- ken that these two, wonderful people have to be subjected to this and that The Jewish News compounds it by putting it in print. It is scurrilous. Shame on you. Leonard H. Trunsky West Bloomfield Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thursday, eight days prior to issue date.
