advising all European importers that
all Israeli goods could be in breach of
trade stipulations, according to the
statement.
The disagreement arose after the
EU alleged Israeli fruit juice manu-
facturers were mixing Israeli juice
with Brazilian juice before packaging
and export to Europe. The manufac-
turers' representatives strongly deny
this, maintaining the EU has no evi-
dence to back its accusations.

El Al Moves
Into The Black

Jerusalem (JPFS) — El Al reported a
marked improvement in the three-
quarters balance, with a profit of
$21.4 million, compared to a loss of
$43 million during the first nine
months of 1996, a net improvement
of $64 million.
However, because of expected loss-
es in the fourth quarter, the com-
pany still expects to end the year with
a net loss of $10 million to $20 mil-
lion, El Al spokesman Nachman Klie-
man said.
The main increase in revenues
came during the third quarter, the
summer season, which is a tradition-
ally profitable period for the airline,
when the net profit came to $42.7
million, compared to $11 million
during the period of last year. This
year, the company noted, there con-
tinued to be a drop in incoming
tourists and a rise in the number of
Israelis traveling abroad.

Gov't Publishes
Gas Tender

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The government
published an international tender for
the supply of natural gas.
The successful company will be
responsible for purchasing, transmit-
ting and marketing the gas, which
the National Infrastructure Ministry
hopes will be on stream by 2001.
Among the countries contending
for the tender are Russia and her
neighbors in the former Soviet
Union, Turkey, Norway, Egypt and
Qatar.
