Sadly, as throwaway character/aboli-
tionist Theodore Joadson, the always
powerful Morgan Freeman is barely a
blip on screen. A pox upon Spielbera
and the rest of Amistads editors if the
meat of Freeman's performance was
left on some cutting room floor or,
worse yet, if his name was merely used
for his box office draw. Standing out
most glaringly as a community-theater
Little Leaguer thrown into a thespian
World Series, McConaughey offers
what he can but brings little with him
to drive your emotions out of the
proverbial ball park.
Leave that to Hounsou.
If Amistad's screenplay is now and
again too eager to drive a point home,
if its direction seems periodically jusr
the other side of restrained, all is for-
given.
In Amistad, we get both a vivid col-
lective consciousness of the sickening
atrocities of the slave trade, and a
fiercely emotional portrait of dignity.
These are not Gone with the Wind's
jocular, devoted servants, but free men
and women torn from their homeland
and summarily fettered into the leg
irons and cultural biases that made the
unspeakable a thriving industry.
On screen, we see ourselves, whoev-
er we happen to be.
Between black and white, A _ mistad
delicately paints the swatches that
comprise the many subtle shades of
gray. As all of only the greatest films
