Begins December 8th West Bloomfield, Michigan Orchard Lake Road, North of Maple Jewish Federation Apartments is poised to build the first of two new 100-unit senior citizen complexes. ♦ We,st. Bloomfield ♦ (248) 851 7727 - A plan to build two identical senior housing complexes on the Jewish Community Campus in West Bloomfield came one step closer to fruition this week with the approval of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's board of gov- ernors. Roughly 8 1/2 acres of property will be allocated by the Federation to Jewish Federation Apartments for the project, which could begin as early as next summer. The buildings will be constructed one at a time, although both received the go-ahead from West Bloomfield Township and the Federation. The buildings represent the sixth and seventh of JFA's senior living complexes — Prentis and Teitel on the A. Alfred Taubman campus in Oak Park, and Fleischman, Hechtman I and Hechtman II on the Maple/Drake campus in West Bloomfield. The new buildings will offer minimal medical assistance to residents. The sixth of the complexes will be, like Hechtman II, a market-rate apartment building. Rents there are $784 per month. A kosher kitchen is expected to be built at the new com- plex. JFA Executive Director Marsha Goldsmith Kamin said the new building, which will be located north of Hechtman II, will help whittle down the huge waiting list for Hechtman II. However, there are waiting lists for JFA's lower- income buildings that will not be affected. JFA's plan to build the new com- plexes required a zoning amendment to allow for more density per acre of property. The process took close to a year. Trustees in West Bloom- field approved the variance last sum- mer. An architect has been selected for the new project, and after drawings r, are completed, JFA will submit them for site plan approval by West Bloomfield. A builder will then be selected. Marsha Kamin: Whittling the list. The estimated cost of the first building will be $7 million, said JFA President Gerald Brody. Financing may come through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and private donations. ❑
