things with confidence," he encour-
aged. "Use your collections —
Limoges, antique china, art glass.
Pull out everything you have, make
your selections, and use it in a differ-
ent way. Mix the old with the new,
set an antique plate on a new glass
dish. Mix arty and formal pieces,
mix and match gold and silver, but
colors and patterns should comple-
ment each other."
He also suggests taking a chance
and trying different things. "Put a
French bean bag doll in the middle
of a centerpiece. Spray paint osage
oranges and put them in a silver
bowl. Be eclectic — look at your
things and ask — how else could I
use it?"
Jacobs' believes in being creative and
letting yourself go. "Look for ideas in
magazines. Use greenery on the tables.
Wind ivy in the chandelier. Place a
basket on its side with something corn-
ing out of it. Throw a beautiful challis
scarf on the table and turn a wooden
crate on its side and fill it with pome-
granates. You can do incredible things
with fruits and vegetables. Fill a tall
cylinder glass with apples. Look for
unusual remnants in fabric stores and
use them on the table."
Her advice on menu planning?
Use a variety of colors and textures,
select foods that are in season, con-
sider taste, texture and temperature,
be creative in the presentation.
And on the slight chance that
your recipe fails, wear a big smile —
at least you've set a beautiful table.

Chanukah Tips-

Leslie Jacobs recommends the fbi--
lowing to brighten your tablescapes.
• Create a child-like fantasy table
• Decorate a white cloth with sil-
ver and blue mylar
• Use a dreidel cake as your cen-
terpiece
• Use a collection of menorahs
• Scatter dreidels and Chanukah
gelt on the table
• Adorn Chanukah sugar cookies
and lay them on the table
• Serve ice cream in large plastic
dreidels
